TOD K CUNNINGHAM.
A business-savvy, results-oriented professional with a passion for the behavioral health industry. Over 25 years of executive management experience including 20 years of experience in the behavioral health industry as Vice President, with a focus on client acquisitions, strategic program development, overall operations, and company profitability. Tod is committed to using ethical principles in the client acquisitions process, program development, public relations strategies, operations management, and overall business methodologies.
Tod is passionate about behavioral health and specifically addiction. He became involved the way many people do – after seeing a loved one struggle with addiction. Watching someone he cared about struggle with his/her addiction broke his heart, which is why he began volunteering with We Care America. While there, he learned as much as he could about recovery.
While at We Care America, he met Jocelyn Whitfied , director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA). She inspired him to become even more involved in the field, which led to a role as the Vice President of Pacific Hills Treatment Centers/Covenant Hills Treatment Center. He turned his dedicated volunteer work into a second career and had a greater opportunity to make an even bigger difference for thousands of individuals, families, and behavioral health companies nationwide.
Tod has worked closely with leaders like Dr. Amen of the Amen Clinics, Terence T. Gorski, president of CENAPS and clinical director of its Relapse Prevention Certification School, leaders of Celebrate Recovery, executives at Betty Ford/Hazelden, and many other behavioral health experts.
Tod was a successful businessman for years before joining Pacific Hills and has spent the years after he left helping treatment centers streamline their process and become profitable and more effective. However, he has recognized that there are gaps to the effective treatment equation: quality treatment, affordability, accessibility, post-treatment, and the continuum of care post-treatment.
Throughout his career, Tod has seen how big a challenge addiction can be, both for addicts and for the people who love them. He also knows how amazingly effective treatment can be. He has seen people completely turn their lives around after going through addiction treatment, and he wants to make that option available to anyone who wants it.
During his time at Pacific Hills, Tod served as an advisor to many patients and families. People would reach out, ready to get help and beat their addiction, but not able to receive the required help. Tod found that only a small percentage of the people who reached out for help were able to overcome the barriers to treatment (knowledge, finances, willingness, commitment, grit, effective support, etc). He saw firsthand how heartbreaking and desperate people became when they knew they needed help but did not have the resources to access it. He felt called to work with patients and families to figure out how to overcome the issues preventing them from getting the help they deserved.
As a behavioral health professional, Tod understood the importance of maintaining full capacity. Because there was no lack of demand, he instead focused on finding ways for families to enter treatment. As a result, he developed a deep familiarity with the many different strategies for those seeking treatment and used them to help fill his centers.
